Pr Max Lafontan

Researcher at Inserm since 1985
From 1988 to 2002, he headed Inserm Unit 317 (Adrenergic Regula- tions and Metabolic Adaptations)
He was also head of the Louis Bugnard research center

His original work has contributed to the identification of human alpha2-adrenergic adipocytes and neuropeptide Y receptors, as well as the definition of the molecular determinants of the interaction of beta-adrenergic and alpha2-adrenergic receptor-mediated events in fat cells of various species.
The observation of the production of lysophosphatidic acids (LPA) by fat cells has allowed the identification of a new secretion of adipocytes (for example autotaxine, a lysophospholipase involved in the production of LPA).
The discovery, in 2000, of the original role of atrial natriuretic peptides (ANP) in controlling lipolysis and lipid formation in humans has opened up a hitherto unsuspected field of research.

Professor Lafontan has been a board member and president of the French Association for Research and Research on Obesity (AFERO) and a board member of the European Association for the Study of Obesity (AEEO).

He was awarded the 2003 AEEO Friederich Wasserman Award for his research activities in the area of fat metabolism and obesity.

Considered the « Pope » of Adipocyte Research.
